Aeration And Overseeding Tips

PPLM’s Aeration And Overseeding Tips

This process is especially beneficial for lawns suffering from high usage, overgrown thatch beneath the grass, or not to mention a lack of proper nutrients in the soil.

High Usage – Does your lawn serve as the main area for weekend barbecues and family gatherings? After all, your lawn soil can suffer from soil compaction, which prevents water and nutrients from reaching the soil under your lawn.

Tip: If you recently had any construction finished on your house, you may want to aerate your lawn this season. Furthermore, large construction equipment tends to exacerbate any soil compaction problems.

Thatch Overgrowth – Thatch is the mix of organic matter, such as roots, sticks, and leaves, underneath your grass. If your grass is unable to break down this layer faster than it accumulates, then you can get a sponge-like feel to your grass.

This build-up of thatch suffocates your soil by not allowing the proper amount of water and circulation to get into the ground. Aerating your lawn helps by providing holes for water and air to circulate throughout the soil.

Below are just some Aeration And Overseeding Tips.

*What Is Aeration And Overseeding?

Aeration is the process of poking holes into your grass to allow water and air to better circulate down to the roots of your grass and down into the soil. We recommend this service in the Fall and Spring seasons when it isn’t too hot or too cold for your lawn.  Once the aeration is completed is the best time to apply a good quality blend of Tall Type Fescue.  The aeration holes will give the seed a place to fall into and help keep moist and a place to help germinate.

*Keeping The Soil Moist Is Key.

You want to keep the new seed moist for at least 21 days.  Everyday that the seed dries out it adds to the time the seed will germinate.  You want to water the new seed just enough to keep moist and not to over water to runoff.

*Don’t Mow

We all know everyone loves to mow the lawn after Aeration and Overseeding.  The reality of it is you need to wait for at least 3-4 weeks before mowing.  The new grass isn’t strong enough to handle the mowing any sooner than 4 weeks.

*Now Weed Control

After aeration and seeding you will see weeds.  Do not apply and weed control till after the 2nd mowing of the new grass.  New grass is very tender during these times and weed control will either kill or hurt the new grass.
